The EduPop uses a Cisco 6509 router.  Several high-bandwidth interfaces support the varied  interconnections needed by the EduPop project.  These interconnections include the OC-12 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) connection between the EduPop and the GigaPOP, the Gigabit ethernet connection to the Metropolitan Area Gigabit Internet Exchange (MAGIE) and the dedicated OC-3 Packet over Sonet (POS) interconnection to a major Houston area ISP.

The OC-3 ATM connection to the Southwestern Bell ATM cloud is done in the Texas GigaPOP's Marconi 1200 ATM switch.  Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) are routed through to the EduPop as necessary.

Every interface on the 6509 has a shelf spare.  Redundant power supplies are connected to different AC Power circuits.  There is a hot spare for the system supervisor card installed in the system.
